The FG knot is a relatively new braid to mono (or fluoro) knot that has proven to be stronger and thinner than all other braid to leader knots we’ve tested it also happens to be much thinner than all of the other braid to leader knots because the thicker leader line never doubles over like it does for traditional fishing knots. The absolute best and fastest way to tie the FG knot is to thread the leader onto the braid while the braid is under tension.

Other knots such as the Uni-to-Uni and PR Robbin knot are also very good methods of tying Braid to mono or fluorocarbon leader.

Fluorocarbon leader line is clear, abrasion-resistant, and is heavier than water. The line is stiff and does not stretch as much as traditional monofilament. When fishing with braid and fluorocarbon leaders there will be little stretch in the line. This can be good to get a quick hookset but does not absorb quick movements from strong fish. For this reason, reels with quality drag and somewhat flexible poles should be used when fishing with braid and fluorocarbon. Fluorocarbon covers a broad family of compounds, including organics comprised of fluorine, chlorine and carbon, along with synthetics made from hydrocarbons—and has been used in everything from Teflon to Freon. In the fishing world, it's associated with polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF for short). It's extruded in a single strand similar to nylon monofilament. But because fluorocarbon's molecules are more tightly packed, the line is denser and noticeably heavier by size. It also differs from mono in visibility, stretch and durability—all of which affect how it performs in the water.

Low Visibility - One of fluorocarbon's biggest benefits is it's nearly invisible underwater. This is because it doesn't appreciably distort light passing through the line (it has nearly the same refractive index as water), and it's a huge factor in clear water and when targeting skittish fish. Abrasion Resistance - Fluorocarbon's low visibility characteristics allow anglers to use stouter pound test lines in situations such as heavy cover tactics for bass. As an added benefit it also has incredible abrasion resistance and as such has quickly become a top choice of the pros when fishing the thickest cover or dragging baits along the bottom. Sensitivity - Fluoro's tightly packed molecules transmit more energy than mono, better telegraphing information from the other end of the line, such as light bites or your lure ticking bottom. Also boosting sensitivity, fluoro sinks faster than mono, resulting in less slack or bow between the lure and rod tip.

In most cases, the length of your fishing leader should be between 60 to 75 cm (25 - 30 inches) . Your leader length can be shorter or longer than this, depending on your fishing style, main fishing line, weather, and surrounding underwater features. Having your leader over 60cm allows you to be able to snap off any abrasion on the line close to the lure or hook without making much of a difference in length and having to retie your braid/ mono to leader knot.
